5 Places To Earn Money Writing Fantasy

It would be nice to get paid to write our daydreams in another world.

Good thing that’s possible.

I’m happy to share with you places you can get paid. I know you don’t want to waste time, so here are the 5 places to earn money writing fantasy. From high fantasy to dark realism, it’s all here for you.

5. Beneath Ceaseless Skies

The first one is common but still a good pick for anyone looking to write long fantasy stories.

They accept fantasy fiction that’s under 15k words and pay 8 cents per word. That means if you write the maximum, you can earn up to $1.2k with one story.

I would like to say you can make full income with this but the response time is 1-3 weeks on average. They don’t accept multiple submissions either.

Finally, submissions must be in standard manuscript format.

For the full guidelines check here.

4. Clarkesworld

Another commonly mentioned one but for good reason.

The word limit is 1k to 22k with 12 cents per word. If you write the maximum, that’s $2.64k for one story. Their average response time is also under 2 days so you can make an actual income with this.

So if your story gets too big for Beneath Ceaseless Skies then this is a great alternative.

This big paycheck does not come easy though. Your story must be well written, suitable for on-screening reading and audio.

They also have a big list of what not to do which you’ll find on their submission page.

If you have the skills, this can pay the bills.

3. Seize The Press

Let’s go back to smaller word counts and something a bit darker.

This publication wants dark fantasy and horror. So if you have something messed up and bleak then this is the place for you.

The word count is under 2k and 8 cents per word. At max, you can make $160 per story.

The biggest problem is the 30 day max response time. It’s still a good and unique option if you can create a 2k story quickly.

The full guidelines are here.

2. Factor Four Magazine

What if you only have time for flash fiction? Then this one is for you.

Word count is under 1k and pays 11 cents per word. You can earn a max of $110. The response time on average is 39 days so that’s something to keep in mind.

The full guidelines are here.

1. Podcastle

Let’s end with something that’s not too long or short.

Word limit is 6k and pays 8 cents which means the maximum is $480 per story.

But here’s the unique selling point, you can submit 2 stories at the same time. One reprint and one original. The reprint can sell for $20(under 1.5k words) to $100(over 1.5k words).

Submit 2 stories at once can pay you up to $580 for the price of one story and some editing.

You need to edit the reprint for the audience who will listen to your story instead of reading it. Keep that in mind.

Finally, the response time can be up 129 days if you’re accepted.

If that sounds doable, here are the full guidelines.

Conclusion

That’s was the 5 place to earn some money, maybe even an income with the second one.

The last thing I have for you is something a bit special.

This might make my money posts redundant but I think you should know this. While making this post I found an incredible tool.

Just for you, this website will show how likely you are to get accepted and let you search for more publications.

All done by tracking submissions and getting the percentages of successes and failures.

Here’s an example:

Dark Recesses (Online)

  • 27.27% Accepted – Takes an average of 65 days to respond
  • 72.72% Rejected – Takes an average of 27 days to respond

If you don’t have great confidence in your writing, stay away from ones that have a very low acceptance rate.

With that, I wish you luck creative writers. I hope you succeed in making money from your writing.
